Jean-Claude is Biologist. He obtained his doctorate in Sciences at the Free University of Brussels (Belgium), on the adaptive significance of karyotype variability in Leishmania. Working since 1986 at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium), he is now head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and the unit of Molecular Parasitology.
He dedicated his career to the exploration of molecular diversity in natural populations of Leishmania in both clinical and epidemiological contexts, especially in Latin America and in the Indian sub-continent. He is a pioneer in the application of next generation sequencing methods for Leishmania typing.
He has been coordinating several European consortia, more recently in the domain of drug resistance (Leishnatdrug, Kaladrug-R).
