Joana Pissarra

Joana studied Microbiology at the University of Lisbon and obtained her Master's degree in Applied Microbiology after doing her thesis internship in the malaria field at Leiden University Medical Centre (The Netherlands). After her MSc, she explored different areas of expertise both in academia and industry, namely, bacterial RNA degradation control at ITQB-UNL (Oeiras, Portugal), siRNA-based therapies at Sylentis (Madrid, Spain) and more recently at IMM (Lisbon, Portugal) focusing on a whole-organism vaccination approach against malaria and on liver stage Plasmodium infection.

She is interested in the interplay between pathogens and immune system and her research, within the Euroleish.net project, focuses on the development of a peptide-based vaccine against human leishmaniasis.
